Former Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) Member of the Mayoral Committee for Infrastructure, Monica Mohale was elected as Speaker of the coucil during a council meeting last Thursday.
This follows after the former Speaker, Nakedi Lekganyane was sworn in as member of the Provincial Legislature last Wednesday. Lekganyane subsequently tendered her resignation as Speaker.
After Mohale was nominated as Speaker, Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor David Setjie nominated fellow DA councillor Androe Botha as Speaker. The nomination was duly seconded and Botha accepted the nomination, making it necessary for an election, which Mohale won with 28 votes against the 14 votes for Botha.
In her acceptance speech, Mohale thanked Lekganyane for the sterling way in which she has led the council and expressed the desire that all councillors will work together in the interests of the communities that they serve.
