Mitchell House receives eco-schools honours

Eco-schools is an international programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), developed to support environmental learning in the classroom.

POLOKWANE – Mitchell House was recently acknowledged as one of the schools who were eco-conscious and proactive, during the 2019 eco-schools programme award ceremony, which recently took place at Bolivia Lodge.

The school was awarded with two platinum awards for their participation. Having accepted the award on behalf of the school, Zac Swallow who is a teacher at the school and also runs the programme at the school, said the school has been involved with the eco-schools programme, run by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa) for the past seven years.

“In this time we have progressively obtained the various flags and eco-awards for each year. The programme is designed to get schools (specifically the children) become eco-conscious/aware as well as eco-proactive. Projects are undertaken by the school, which cover a range of important themes. These themes are: Biodiversity and nature, energy, health and well-being, marine and coast, water, transport, climate change, community and heritage, waste, school grounds and eco-tourism,” he explained.

Eco-schools is an international programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), developed to support environmental learning in the classroom. It aims to create awareness and action around social and environmental sustainability in schools and support education for sustainable development in the national curriculum. With over 50% of the content in all CAPS subjects being environmental in nature, eco-schools make a positive contribution towards South Africa.

The programme is active in almost 70 countries around the world and has been implemented in South Africa since 2003 by Wessa.
