Sarah Mathebu Malema, grandmother of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Commander-in-Chief Julius Malema, was laid to rest at Seshego cemetery on Saturday afternoon.
The funeral service for the 90-year-old held at Ngoako Ramatlhodi Sports Complex saw a large group of mourners, politicians, newsmakers and captains of industry in attendance.
In his eulogy Julius described his grandmother as “A goddess, the creator of giant revolutionaries who served the people at the forefront of the inevitable socialist change of South Africa and the continent.”

He recalled that his grandmother was a hardworking woman who cared about everyone. “She worked as a domestic worker for several Indian families and lived most of her life as a single parent raising, in a small two bedroom apartheid house, her children and grandchildren. She dedicated most of her life to entrepreneurship. A true township entrepreneur she sold vegetables, home brewed beer, mashotja, herbs and snuff. She is certainly the first generation of what is now Seshego, a modern black camp settlement we call a township,” Malema said.
She was laid to rest at Seshego cemetery.
