Limpopo Premier-elect Stan Mathabatha and Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) are expected to be sworn in by the Limpopo Judge President, Ephraim Makgoba at the legislative chamber in Lebowakgomo on Wednesday.
This is according to the media liaison officer of the Limpopo Legislature, Meodi Mothapo, who indicated that Makgoba would preside over the sitting. He said the first business of the house would be to elect the Premier who will then take oath of office followed by the election of the Speaker of the Provincial Legislature. Upon the election, the Speaker would then preside over the sitting for the election of the Deputy Speaker, Mothapo explained.
He further said the house would then appoint permanent delegates to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP). Once the Premier and the Speaker are elected they will decide on the dates and venues for the official opening of the Legislature, Mothapo concluded.
A statement issued by Parliamentary Communication Services indicated that the first sitting of the National Assembly is provisionally scheduled for Wednesday and that of the NCOP for next Thursday.
During the first sitting of the National Assembly, the Chief Justice will preside over each member of the National Assembly’s swearing in. The Chief Justice will also preside over the election of the Speaker of the National Assembly, who will preside over the election of the Deputy Speaker. It was further learnt that in the same house sitting, the Chief Justice will then preside over the election of the President, selected from among the Members of Parliament (MPs) in the National Assembly.
