Learners of Laerskool Ivy Park celebrated the country’s diversity of language, religions and ethnicity during their Africa Day celebrations held at the school last Thursday.
The festivities gave learners an opportunity to taste some scrumptious African dishes such as tripe, sorghum porridge, mala mogodu (chicken intestines) and mashotja (mopani worms) also to learn about various cultures in the country.
According to educator Irene van Aswegen the event formed part of the school’s socio-cultural awareness programme. “We also taught learners about humanity. We wanted to make them aware of other cultures and beliefs as well as customs found in their country. The day also gave students an opportunity to dress in their favourite traditional outfits to represent various ethnic groups,” van Awegen said.
