Limpopo sees a decrease in road fatalities, crashes over the Easter period

This is according to the official 2019 Preliminary Easter Road Safety Report which was released today (Thursday, 2 May) at the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) in Tshwane.

LIMPOPO – In a statement released, Minister of Transport, Dr Blade Nzimande, said a total of 162 fatalities were recorded across South Africa from 18-22 April which represents a 48% decrease compared to the 309 people who died in the same period last year.

This marks a decrease of one hundred and forty-seven (147) fatalities.

He added that all provinces recorded decreases in the number of fatalities and crashes. Limpopo recorded the highest decease of 41 fatalities followed by KwaZulu Natal with 33 fatalities. “128 crashes were recorded during this period, which is a 46% decrease compared with the 238 crashes in 2018… This indicates a decrease of 110 crashes in comparison with the previous Easter period.”

The province that recorded the highest decreases in absolute figures is Limpopo with 27 crashes followed by KwaZulu Natal with 21 crashes.

‘On behalf of the Government of South Africa, I would like to send our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who died on our roads and wish those who were injured a speedy recovery at home or in hospital.”

He concluded and said that although the number of crashes and fatalities on South African roads have been drastically reduced, he called on South Africans to take responsibility when using the roads. “We can still do more to eradicate this calamity on our roads because one death is one too many.”
