The Department of Transport and Community Safety has confirmed that ten persons died in an accident between a taxi and a truck on the N1 at Modimolle earlier this morning (Thursday).
Departmental Spokesperson Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala indicated that the driver of the taxi was allegedly speeding when he lost control of the minibus and swerved in front of oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with a truck.
Transport and Community Safety MEC Makoma Makhurupetje was quoted in a press statement to have said: “This is another sad day in our province. We have lost ten people in an accident that could have been prevented if the required speed limit was adhered to. This is heart wrenching indeed. Although the exact cause of this horrific accident is yet to be unravelled, I wish to extend our deepest condolences to the families of the ten people who lost their lives and further wish a speedy recovery to those injured.”
She once again reminded motorists to stick to the obligatory speed limit on the N1. “Anyone who infringes this rule is a risk not only to himself but to other road users. Motorists are also advised to rest in-between trips as fatigue can be the biggest killer. Limpopo has been declared a zero tolerance province against anyone caught not obeying the rules,” she stated.
