Themane murder accused spotted in city despite prohibitive conditions

Despite their bail conditions ordering them to relocate from the city, some of the seven teenagers who are accused of killing Thorisho Themane were spotted by local residents this week.

POLOKWANE – A source, whose identity is being withheld, has told Review that he and several other people, have spotted some of the teenagers accused of killing Thoriso Themane within Polokwane, despite one of their bail conditions being that they have to move out of the city.

Upon hearing this, Review contacted the spokesperson for the Thorisho Themane Foundation, Kevin Pohotona who said they will be taking the issue up with relevant authorities as this goes against the bail conditions given to them and poses a safety threat to the community.

“We have an affidavit that has been filed with police to revoke the perpetrators’ bail. The challenge we face now, is taking that affidavit to the Director of the National Prosecuting Authority and following proper protocol in having bail revoked as they have not been adhering to the conditions set and that is what we’re tackling as a foundation at the moment,” Pohotona told Review.

The Foundation as well as the Themane family expressed their disappointment in the justice system of South Africa after all suspects were granted bail on 3 April. “This does not scream justice to us as a nation. The brutality of the murder of Thorisho Themane that was publicly broadcasted, mocked and disregarded by the minor suspects lays heavy in our hearts as we still live everyday with fear of our youth within our communities and of the safety of our children, especially those associated to or with the ‘Madhura Gang’,” Pohotona said.

The teenagers, as well as two adults also accused of murdering Themane, will next appear on 31 May 2019.
