Teaching is a learning curve but fuels Caswell’s passion to educate the youth

Passion should be the deciding factor when pursuing a career, says student teacher, Caswell Ramalepe.

POLOKWANE – Passion should be the deciding factor when pursuing a career. This is the feeling of Caswell Ramalepe, a third-year education student at the University of the Free State. The 22-year-old from Mankweng, currently residing in Westenburg, says growing up he did not see himself in front of the green board with chalk and duster.

“Like every other youngster, I wished and dreamt of becoming an engineer as I was informed that this where the money is. As I grew up and attended career exhibitions and workshops, as well as engaging with adults close to me, I realised that one needs to follow and pursue a career which one is passionate about,” he explained. Caswell started working as a student teacher at Hoërskool Westenburg Secondary at the beginning of the year. He says the experience is a learning curve, and makes his love and passion to educate and help the youth be informed even bigger.

“I get so much joy when I mark tests and assessment sheets and the learners did well, showing they understand the work and grasped it. I love and enjoy teaching as I know that I am building a future teacher, president, engineer or even a doctor. All these professionals were taught by a teacher to get to where they are now. Being a teacher is a very important profession in the community and we need more teachers,” he added.

He is currently teaching geography, life sciences and mathematics.
