Five suspects allegedly responsible for a series of criminal activities, including an incident of murder along the N1 highway between Bela-Bela and Modimolle recently were expected to appear in the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court earlier this week after they were arrested during a joint operation by Police last Thursday.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe indicated that the suspects, aged between 30 and 46 years, were arrested along the N1 near Kranskop Toll Plaza during a joint operation comprised of Modimolle Cluster Trio Crime Task Team, Crime Intelligence Unit, National Intervention Unit from Pretoria and the Heritage Protection Group.
During the arrest three firearms and 31 rounds of live ammunition as well as the motor vehicle they were travelling in were seized. This milestone achievement was made as part of the ongoing clean-up operations to eliminate all forms of criminality along the highway, according to Ngoepe. He also confirmed that the suspects had already been linked to 11 cases of armed robbery and one of murder which they allegedly committed along the N1 within the vicinity of Bela-Bela and Modimolle recently.
The five also face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and racketeering under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act. The origin of the recovered motor vehicle, firearms and ammunition is still being investigated.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba welcomed the arrest and congratulated members who participated in securing the arrest.
