Limpopo’s roads declared a zero tolerance zone as millions make their way for Easter

An influx of visitors are expected to make their way to Limpopo next weekend for, among other events, the Moria Zion City pilgrimage

POLOKWANE – The MEC for Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo, Makoma Makhurupetje says the department are ready for the upcoming Easter Weekend, with the main aim of stabalising and reducing accidents, serious injuries and fatalities.

“As we expect to receive millions of people going to different churches and family gatherings, including the Moria Zion City pilgrimage, traffic flow will be high on all our major routes, especially the R71 to Moria, the N1 from Gauteng to Beitbridge and the N11 and Gilead Road from Groblersbridge. Our aim to ensure intelligence-driven deployment of both human and material resources on identified hazardous locations, in order to promote safer roads during the Easter weekend period,” she said in a statement.

Makhurupetje went on to urge motorists to obey the rules of the road, saying that deaths caused by road accidents over the Easter weekend are a harsh reality Limpopo faces. “This can only be rectified through a change in the behaviour of all road users. In most cases, the tragic stories of innocent lives ruined through road accidents are a result of reckless behaviour or un-roadworthy vehicles,” she added.

Makhurupetje says that as a department, they can never overemphasize the importance of road safety and adds that road safety is everybody’s responsibility.

“Drinking and driving is highly irresponsible and we urge the public not to drive while intoxicated or travel with a driver who is under the influence,” she reiterated.

The following continues to be hazardous locations in the province:

Capricorn: R71, R37 Ga-Chuene, N1 Botlokwa, R 529 Dendron cross.

Sekhukhune: R 37 Burgersfort CBD, N11 Marble hall and Jane Furse, R555 De hoop dam

Waterberg: N1 Mookgopong, N11 Tshamahantsi (Uitsig)

Mopani: R576 Maswanganyi and Nhlaniki, R81 Xikukwane, R71 Makhushane, R 36 De Oaks.

“We declare Limpopo a zero tolerance province against any road user who does not obey the rules of the road,” Makhurupetje concluded.
