Bus driver arrested for driving under the influence on the N1 near Matoks

The bus was travelling from Thohoyandou to Gauteng with 52 passengers on board.

POLOKWANE – A bus driver was arrested after having being caught driving under the influence of alcohol on the N1 near Matoks.

Spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala says the bus was travelling from Thohoyandou to Gauteng with 52 passengers on board when the driver was arrested.

“The journey had to temporarily be stopped in order for another driver to arrive,” he said in a statement.

In addition to the bus driver being arrested, 12 motorists were also arrested in the Sibasa area for drunk driving.

MEC for the Department of Transport and Community Safety, Makoma Makhurupetje has applauded the zero tolerance attitude portrayed by traffic officials and has stronglyly condemned the behavior of the bus driver for risking the lives of 52 innocent passengers by driving under the influence.

“Bus owners must check driver fitness just as they do vehicle fitness before every journey,” she urged.
