Polokwane Municipality concerned over ongoing cable theft incidents

POLOKWANE – The Municipality says they are concerned about ongoing acts of cable theft within the municipal jurisdiction as it impacts negatively on service delivery.

In a statement released, municipal spokesperson, Thipa Selela says cable theft was identified at Lota substation on Friday night, where protective infrastructure was stolen. The substation supplies areas around Fauna Park, Flora Park, Serala View, Ster Park and Thornhill.

“So far, the incident has not affected services in those areas. However, the substation has been left in a vulnerable state and the situation could turn worse if a fault is experienced. Unfortunately, the municipality cannot divulge more information due to security features. However, there have been a few arrests since our security system was installed,” Selela added.

The municipality says they lose a lot of money because of cable theft and in this financial year alone, they have spent in excess of R13 million due to cable theft.

“Ongoing theft and vandalism of municipal infrastructure impacts negatively on normal lives of the residents and their safety and security. Cable theft is a criminal offence punishable by law. The municipality urges anyone to assist with information that can lead to the arrest of those involved,” he concluded.
