Baby snatched from Mokopane Shopping Center, manhunt launched for suspect

After accompanying the baby's 24-year-old mother to a supermarket, carrying the baby, the woman disappeared with the infant

MOKOPANE – A high level task team has been set up by he Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Major General Jan Scheepers to find the woman who stole a six-week-old baby boy at Mokopane shopping center on Thursday, 28 March.

According to a police statement by police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the baby’s 24-year-old mother allegedly met an unknown woman in the shopping center and walked with her while shopping. The mother then bought food and invited the stranger to join her, but she turned her down.

“The suspect offered to hold the baby so that the mother can eat. A while later, while still holding the baby, they went to another supermarket and without the mother noticing, the suspect disappeared with the infant,” Ngoepe explained.

He added that the alleged baby snatcher is in her twenties, lightweight and dark in complexion with long, plaited hair.
