Two arrested during public violence at Vuwani village

LIMPOPO -Two people have been arrested for public violence following violent protest action at Tshino village outside Thohoyandou, where eight houses belonging to foreign nationals were torched.

Police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, said the protests which erupted on Sunday, 17 March, saw residents in the area rampage through the village, block roads and ultimately torch eight houses belonging to foreign nationals.

“The motive for the violence is not clear at this stage and  Public Order Police members are still deployed in the affected area to quell the violence following the arrest of the two suspects.”

Police investigators continue to trace other possible suspects and urge anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects is requested to contact Captain Ntshengedzeni Dzivhani at 082 565 7794, Ngoepe added.

They can also contact the crime stop number 0860010111, the crime SMS line 32211 or the nearest police station.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has condemned the violent protest in the strongest possible terms.

The arrested suspects, aged 39 and 53, are expected to appear in the Vuwani Magistrate court soon on charges of public violence, malicious damage to property and arson.
