Limpopo artist gives the phrase ‘playing house’ a different meaning

"To me art is not just art. It is a natural talent. I believe that when God created me, He had a purpose for me to illustrate architecture."

LIMPOPO – These are the words of a local artist, Mpho Matshivha from Ha-Makatu in Nzhelele.

The 25-year-old said his art focuses on buildings.

In an exclusive interview with CV, he said he started creating them in 2002 when he was in Gr 5.

“I was inspired by my late neighbour, Samuel Mathalise who was also an artist. He used to create the very same artwork,” he added.

When asked how long it takes to complete one art piece, he said: “I spend the whole month to make a single-storey house, but a double-storey house takes two months.”

He further said that he uses ceiling board, card boxes, glue, enamel paint and match sticks to complete his projects.

“I have a passion for designing houses,” he said.

He said that the art costs starts at R2 500. “It depends on how the model was made.

“People are interested in my artwork, but they don’t want to pay. They like cheap stuff,” he added.

He advised other young people to use their God-given talent. “Whatever talent that has been given to you, use it wisely. Your talent can bring food to the table,” he advised.

He attended Shura Primary School and Nngweni Secondary School, he completed matric in 2009 and decided to study civil engineering at Tshwane South TVET College.
