A 19-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court soon in connection with an incident relating to the alleged assault and murder of his girlfriend at Masemola early on Tuesday morning.
According to Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe the suspect is also charged with arson. This after he allegedly went to his girlfriend’s house at around midnight where an argument ensued between them. It is reported that the argument resulted in her being stabbed with a sharp object, according to Ngoepe who added that the suspect then allegedly set her house on fire before fleeing the scene.
The girlfriend and her mother managed to escape the blaze but the couple’s two month old baby burnt to death.
The girlfriend is being treated for serious stab wounds at a local hospital.
Police were summoned and their swift response led to the speedy arrest of the suspect.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba has condemned domestic related incidents which are still prevalent in certain areas of the province.
