UPDATE: Classes suspended indefinitely at Polokwane TUT

Classes at the Polokwane campus of the Tshwane University of Technology has been suspended indefinitely amid ongoing protests.

POLOKWANE – According to reports the students have been told to vacate residences.


POLOKWANE – Students at the Pokwane campus of the Tshwane University of Technology this week damaged property and halted classes, as their counterparts from the Pretoria West and Shoshanguve went on the rampage, demanding the payout of meal allowances.

A photo sent in by a passerby this morning, shows property at the front entrance damaged and the area strewn with litter.
Protests at TUT campuses flared up yesterday as students showed their disgruntlement over the non-payment of National Students Financial Aid Scheme meals allowances. A decision was taken by been taken by the university’s management to suspend activities.

In a statement released by TUT management, they stated that the safety of students, staff and TUT resources is a priority and that the university remained committed to assisting the affected students and has committed to convene a special EMC meeting to consider, for urgent approval, the applications of service providers of identified accommodation that meet the criteria. The process of identifying suitable accommodation and service providers at all campuses will continue as a matter of urgency.
