Satara Rest Camp is one of the most popular  camps in the Kruger, positioned in the southernmost region of the park which is known for its unbelievable game viewing opportunities.

Upon entering Orpen Gate, Satara is found tucked away in a remote wooded area that is surrounded by vast open plains.

Satara is the second biggest rest camp in the Kruger, with a total of 100 campsites, 152 bungalows, 10 guest cottages, and 3 guesthouses. With a warm and welcoming ambiance, the camp is a firm favourite for families with young children. Boasting two and three bedroomed units that are perfect for families, the camp also has a family-friendly restaurant and deli, along with a swimming pool and several play areas – more than most other camps in the Kruger.

From a safari perspective, Satara Rest Camp is well-known for its big cat sightings, particularly lions. Large herds of buffalo dominate the area and there is no shortage of antelope, wildebeest, giraffe, elephant, rhino, and zebra who love to congregate in the plains. There are also several waterholes and dams that boast large numbers of hippo and crocodile.

At night, guests often hear the whoops of spotted hyena patrolling the camp’s perimeter, and some guests have even been fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of honey badgers.

There are two incredible wildlife viewing areas around Satara that should not be missed when on safari. The Sweni Bird Hide is an L-shaped enclosure stilted above a dam in the Sweni River, offering uninterrupted river views, and a tranquil space in which to enjoy the sights and calls of various birds. The Gundzani Waterhole holds masses of water, attracting an abundance of wildlife all year round, particularly lazy hippo who prefer to be head deep in water. It is a wonderful place to take some incredible wildlife snaps.

The activities offered at Satara Rest Camp include guided bush walks and game drives, a  wilderness trail, and a 4×4 adventure trail. For safety reasons, children under the age of six are not permitted on game drives, and children under the age of twelve are restricted from game walks.

Overall Satara Rest Camp is comfortable, equipped with good facilities, and offers an unforgettable safari experience in one of Africa’s best big five destinations.
