Makhukhu uses words and pictures to tell stories

Author, publisher, pastor, former lecturer and owner of a family business, Makhukhu John Tladi was trained as a publisher by Via Afrika Book publishers and Cook Communications in the US.

POLOKWANE – The company later employed him as their book publisher in 1995 after he has been a teacher for 18 years, and that’s when he decided to venture into writing and publishing.

Makhukhu, husband to Evelyn, shares four children together, Letago (38), Mogau (34), Tumelo (28) and Retang (22). He relocated from Lebowakgomo to Flora Park in Polokwane.

“Every morning I would wake up to the sounds of birds chirping. My wife suddenly developed a love for flowers and I fell in love with birds. So every week I would buy bird food. We would love watching different birds in all sorts of colours coming to feed on the seeds. It was such an amazing view,” he said. He added, two gentlemen at his church, Chris Campbell and Nick Baglow from Polokwane’s Bird Watching Club, invited him on a bird watching trip.

“They would travel around Limpopo watching and capturing birds and flowers on camera. This is where you get to know the names and meanings of each and every bird and flower you see. And this is where I started my photo,” he said.

Makhukhu, with camera and binoculars around his neck, would capture photos of birds and flowers.

“I then thought to myself, why don’t I turn this into a business, capturing the beauty of nature. I would place the photos I take into a photo frame, and add a Bible scripture to motivate and encourage people through my work,” he said.

Makhukhu recently wrote a book, Virtue, from the flowers he captured.

“The book talks about wisdom and encourages the readers. It explains what the real meaning of the flower is and how people can relate to it.

“All flowers and birds have a meaning and a life message, we just don’t pay attention to it at times,” he added.

On 19 to 26 September, Makhukhu has been invited to attend the Annual Frankford International Book Fair in Germany.

“One morning I was reading a newspaper and saw a book fair advertisment, which was held in Johannesburg at the Market Theatre, and I decided to apply. I then qualified for the event as an author. I was lucky enough to have been called back. They covered all the expenses for me to travel to the event,” he said. While he was there, he was recognised as a unique author and he was invited to the book fair in Germany, where he will represent South Africa.
