HPG members shot and injured during shoot out with suspected vehicle thieves

A member of the Heritage Protection Group is in hospital after he and his partner were shot and injured during a shoot out with suspected vehicle thieves earlier this afternoon.

MOKOPANE – It is alleged the members, Hannes van Wyk and Hendrik Hattingh, had  tracked down a stolen Toyota Land Cruiser to the Singlewood area outside Mokpane and when they approached the vehicle the shoot out occurred.

Four suspects fled in an Isuzu bakkie, which was later found abandoned in a surrounding village, the exact location is unknown. It is believed the suspects are on foot.

During the incident, Hannes was shot in the stomach and elbow and Hendrik was shot in the foot. Hannes was taken to the Voortrekker Hosiptal for treatment.

According to Marcelle Maritz, who provided assistance, neither Voortrekker Hospital or Mokopane Hospital is able to take X-rays and Hannes will be taken to the Polokwane Provincial Hospital in the next hour.
