In their quest to assist in curbing the high rate unemployment in the country, Working on Fire (WoF) Limpopo recently embarked on a three week recruitment drive across the province.
The campaign attracted more than 50 young persons who aspired to becoming firefighters. They underwent the standard WoF fitness recruitment trial which included a 2,4 km run in 12 minutes or less as well as the ability to do 40 pushups and 40 sit-ups in under a minute. Successful candidates were then granted an interview.
According to the Provincial WoF Spokesperson, Matema Gwangwa the recruitment drive was also aimed at filling up vacant posts at their various bases. “Many people resigned last year and some had their contracts terminated. We saw it necessary to go on a drive to fill those positions and also empower young people,” Gwangwa said.
She said it was important to ensure that the candidates go through their fitness test due to the nature of their work. “Our firefighters are subjected to a certain type of terrain which sometimes includes slopes and mountains and they are required to be physically fit,” Gwangwa explained.
The names of 45 successful candidates will be announced by the end of February.
