Polokwane High Court hands heavy sentences to taxi violence culprits

The police have welcomed the heavy sentences, handed down by the Polokwane High Court, to three men found guilty of taxi related violence in the Tzaneen area.

LIMPOPO – The trio, Matjawela Jeffrey Moagi (38), Sechube Shelenge (28) and Ishmael Shai (33) were involved in serious and violent crimes related to taxi violence which occurred in the Sekororo area during October 2016, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, Spokesperson for the police. said.

“A group of taxi operators and owners including the three accused (all from the Letaba Taxi Association), went to Lorraine village armed with assortment of weapons including firearms and started attacking the rival group (Oaks Taxi Association). During the incident Moses Mitsileng (34),  attached to De-Oaks taxi association was killed and several other people were left injured.”

The trio were sentenced as follows:

Moagi who is a taxi owner under Letaba Taxi Association, was sentenced to Life imprisonment for murder, 10 years imprisonment for attempted murder, five years imprisonment for assault GBH and one year imprisonment for theft.

Shelenge who is a taxi queue Marshal under Letaba taxi association, was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for murder and 10 years imprisonment for attempted murder.

Shai who is also a queue Marshal under the Letaba taxi association from Lorraine village, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for attempted murder.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has commended members of the Provincial Tracking Team for their dedication and commitment displayed in acquiring such long jail terms.

“All those people out there who are still perpetrating any form of crime related to taxi violence, are warned to refrain from such acts, not so, we are going to deal with them mercilessly and without compromise”, concluded General Ledwaba.
