Following the recent killings of union leaders in the province, Premier Stan Mathabatha has reportedly met with the Provincial Security Cluster headed by Provincial Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba and Congress of South Africa Trade Unions (Cosatu) representatives to try and come up with ways to deal with such incidents.
According to Premier Spokesperson Kenny Mathivha, the meeting was prompted by the killing of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) provincial deputy secretary leader, Ronald Mani who was allegedly shot and killed in Tshisahulu village near Thohoyandou last night (Wednesday) and other seemingly political killings that occurred recently, especially in the Vhembe district.
Mathivha indicated that Cosatu leadership raised concern about security measures around them and in Vhembe. They also reported about a gangster group wreaking havoc in the area, he stated and added that Mathabatha was upraised about killings in Tubatse and also the recent crackdown on the murder case of Marks Rambau, Deputy Director of the Department of Transport.
At this moment it is still not clear as to the motives of the shooting and recent killings in both Vhembe, Tubatse and Elias Motsoaledi, Mathivha concluded.
