Nine suspects aged between 18 and 44 who were arrested for public violence at a taxi rank in Ext 19, Mokopane yesterday (Sunday) are expected to appear in the local magistrate’s court today (Monday).
According to Provincial Police Communications Head, Motlafela Mojapelo a group of about 300 people who had gathered at the taxi rank at around 11:45 engaged in fighting.
During the commotion two people sustained serious stab wounds and had to be hospitalised while, according to Mojapelo, several other persons were allegedly stoned and had to be rescued by Police.
The occupants of a Mercedes-Benz Vito were also arrested on the scene when they reportedly produced a firearm. The Police confiscated a pistol and a shotgun with ammunition.
The chaotic situation was immediately stabilised and a total of nine suspects were arrested.
The motive for the violence is not clear yet and more arrests are expected.
