Avid reader, Ahmed, aims for a career in neurology

Ahmed Saloojee is a Northern Muslim School matriculant who took home six distinctions.

POLOKWANE – Ahmed obtained distinctions in all his subjects except English.

He is an avid reader of novels and he has even set a 50 book challenge, for books that are not in anyway school related. Saloojee said his matric year was very exciting but also one of the most stressful and demanding year of his life.

“Your own expectations and goals play a huge part in being who you are and what you want to achieve but there is also expectations and pressure coming from external influences,” he said.

He shared that after writing his final paper, he felt a sense of nostalgia, coupled with a sense of satisfaction and happiness at the realisation that you have finally completed the 12 years of schooling.

He also shared that he also felt a ping of sadness because high school has been your life for the past five years, Monday to Friday.

He said that when he received his results, they were what he expected because throughout his schooling career, he has always been very competitive and pushing himself to do better than he did previously, adding that he competes only with himself and he is his biggest critic.

His faith plays a major part in his life and he saw this year bring him closer to God, whom he turned too when he felt like he was crumbling under pressure.

He has been accepted to study medicine at Wits and plans to specialise in neurology.

“I have always been fascinated with the brain, there have been times when I watched videos on the brain and I read up a lot of articles on how to strengthen the brain, what stimulates it and do exercises to keep it fresh. That’s why reading is one of the things I do as a hobby because it keeps the brain activated and fresh,” he concluded.
