PEPPS’ newly appointed prep headmistress has big plans

Amanda Korff was recently appointed as headmaster for PEPPS' Preparatory School and she has big plans for the school and the enrichment of the learners

POLOKWANE – Amanda was kind enough to let Review in on some of the plans she will be implementing but started off by saying that she is filling the shoes of very capable former heads, who have made her job a bit easier as they have already established the school and she is working with a solid foundation.

She is of the belief that education is about more than just passing a test, it’s about developing skills that will carry them throughout their lives. One of the things that she will be implementing is a rich sports and culture programmme to create a space for learners to find what they are good at. She also plans to involve the kids at grade R level as well, although it’ll be incorporated into their school day.

Amanda will also be implementing STEM lessons to the learner’s day. “We want to create an environment where children can play around with science, engineering and math. We want them to incorporate it into their daily lives,” she said. ‘Beyond life’ will also be part of the learners daily education to equip them with skills that go beyond school as well as promote emotional development.

The school will continue with its normal caps for grade 4 to grade 6 but the grade 7 learners have project based learning, under the theme ‘creating tomorrow’. The learners will still have their language subjects. “It connects them to real world issues and it’s structured in a way that their learning is scaffolding. We put questions before them regarding real life issues like global warming and they do their own research,” she explained.

Having expanded their space, the school now has three grade R classes, three grade 1’s, an two grade 2 and 3 classes.

“The classes have been refurbished but our plan is have a complete foundation phase and ECD center within the next three years, but I’d love if it were done in two,” she said.
