Northern Academy Secondary School emerged as the best Senior National Certificate (NSC) school in the Curro Holdings Group during last year’s Grade 12 exams. Although a part of the Curro group the school’s Grade 12s are examined for the NSC rather than the Independent Examination Board exam.
The announcement of Northern Academy’s huge achievement was made during Curro’s annual matric awards ceremony hosted in Johannesburg recently.
Northern Academy dominated the awards with eight of the top 10 best performing learners hailing from the school. The top spot went to Present Rikhotso who attained an outstanding 94% average. Rikhotso counts her brother as the inspiration for working so hard, seeing that he too was a top achiever. She was also nominated as top independent school learner in Limpopo and will study Actuarial Science at the University of Pretoria this year.
The second spot went to Karishma George, following closely with an average of 93,57%. She sacrificed much of her spare time to study, with one of her main goals to qualify for university. The sacrifices were worth it at the end, with her enrolling for Computer Engineering at the University of Pretoria this year.
Lebea Sathekge secured the third position with his average of 91,14%. He shared how the footballer Cristiano Ronaldo’s hard work and dedication inspired him during his high school career. Sathekge is set to study Accounting Sciences at the University of Pretoria.
All three learners completed matric at Northern Academy and certainly made the most of the opportunities provided to them, with all three being Ruta Sechaba bursary recipients. The Ruta Sechaba Foundation was established in 2016 to provide scholarships, bursaries and awards to qualifying learners at Curro or Curro-managed schools. The PSG Group’s BEE Education Trust is the initial donor to the foundation.
In total, the pass rate for all Curro Holdings’ NSC schools in 2018 stood at 94,3%. Complimenting this was a growth in the number of learners with university exemption, increasing from 42% to 52,1%, while the number of A candidates doubled from 1,1% to 2,2%.
