Messy Westenburg roads prove to be a headache for residents

Part of the complaint is that the water accumulates and flows into Gibbon Street and people are unable to go in or out of their homes.

POLOKWANE – Westenburg residents are lamenting the state of the roads in its RDP section.

A resident who wanted to remain anonymous, said that rain is no longer something to be excited about because of the problems that it brings for the Westenburg residents that are directly affected by the flooding of the streets whenever it rains heavily.

He also said the problem with the flooding of the roads began after the bridge that crosses over into Nirvana was constructed.

“Whenever we have heavy rains, the water flow is extremely heavy, it flows like a river. It makes the place very difficult to move around,” he said.

He further explained that the municipality levelled the roads but it is pointless because more rain is expected and the municipality will just have to come back and level every time it rains.

The request for construction of roads is nothing new, the RDP section of Westenburg has been in existence for 20 years and the community has made requests for the area to be tarred, but they have not received any action from the municipality. It has been part of the agenda on numerous meetings with the municipality and to this day, the municipality is yet to take action.

Municipal Spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo said the problem exists far wider than the RDP section of Westenburg, but to all areas where the municipality is responsible for roads.

With limited resources, it’s not possible for all these areas to be tarred at once.

“The municipality has a road concession programme where all 45 wards in the municipality will have some tar roads installed.

“With recent rain and disasters, the municipality responded to the reported areas to scrape the roads to make them user friendly,” he said.
