Two suspects arrested following car chase and shootout with police near Giyani

The suspects robbed a local spaza shop before fleeing the scene in a stolen motor vehicle.

LIMPOPO – A concerted effort by police in the province to deal with incidents of crime head-on through joint operations by different police stations and units in various clusters continue to produce positive results.

This, is according to police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe following the arrest of two suspects a few hours after committing a business robbery in the Waterval policing area, outside Makhado.

“The suspect and his accomplice robbed a local spaza shop and patrons of money, airtime, cartons of cigarettes and cellphones in Shirley Village before fleeing the scene with a motor vehicle, towards Hlanganani,” Ngoepe explained.

Police were notified and a motor vehicle chase ensued. During that process, two off-duty police officers noticed what was going on and joined in chasing the suspects in a private motor vehicle. 

“The suspects were later spotted in Mahatlane village in the Hlanganani policing area, outside Giyani and they started shooting at police, who retaliated, and the suspects were arrested. No police officer was injured during the cross fire,” he explained. 

During the arrest, all robbed items were recovered and the firearm and a knife used during the robbery, were also recovered.

“The motor vehicle used by the suspects was also confiscated and preliminary police investigations have revealed that the motor vehicle was reported stolen in the Ritavi policing area, outside Tzaneen, a week ago.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Hlanganani and Waterval Magistrate Courts, soon.
