A study nook, a necessity for a school-going child

A study nook for any school-going child is essential even if it is small and compact, where they can do their homework and school tasks.

POLOKWANE – The ideal would of course be if one design a new house to incorporate a study nook into the design from the onset, but mostly one has to utilise existing space in a house to build a study nook. Nowadays one may find study nooks in closer proximity to family areas, but an older child may prefer not to be amidst the more busy family areas when preparing for tests and exams and focusing on the work at hand. The kitchen or living room can be ideal, or a hallway under the stairs or at the end of a long corridor or even a cupboard and wall-mounted desks that can fold away are also a possibility to explore. Necessities are a power point, internet connection and good lighting. Space is also an important aspect of the study nook – whether it is drawers or floating shelves or overhead cupboards. Enough space nowadays is needed for computers or laptops, and good lighting or desk lamp is essential for studying and not putting the eyes under stress. The study nook can be built with a variety of materials and be aesthetically attractive. A pin board or blackboard paint can be practical and utilised for messages or notes. A clock can be hanged above or near the desk to remind a child of the time.

A do-it-yourself desk can easily be assembled by using a plywood bench top, an easel table base and a set of movable drawers for a cost effective and smart solution. Just add a waste bin and bookshelves, if needed, and voila! A study nook. Pretty boxes stacked nicely may also be a practical solution for storing items.

A comfortable chair with good back support is important, posture matters.
