POLOKWANE – The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has personally arrested a 28-year-old suspect for smoking dagga in public.

The arrest was made on Friday afternoon, 28 December, in ga-Mogotlane in the Zebediela policing area while the Provincial Commissioner was visiting stations during ongoing festive season operations, when he found the suspect smoking dagga next to the Casablanca liquor outlet. The dagga had been confiscated.

The Provincial Commissioner had on Monday, 24 December, met with the owner of the Casablanca liquor outlet to warn him not to allow illegal activities, such as smoking dagga and drinking in public, at his premises. The place will now be monitored with the intent of closing it down for non-compliance.

Last week Saturday, 22 December, whilst visiting Senwabarwana police station, the Provincial Commissioner also confronted two males on the verge of smoking dagga in public, just meters from the police station. As the two had not yet lit the dagga, they were nevertheless taken to the police station and warned not to ever smoke dagga in public. The dagga that was already mixed with tobacco, was also confiscated.

Communities are warned to desist from smoking dagga in public as this is against the law and the police will not hesitate to take strong action against them.

The arrested suspect will appear in the Thabamopoo Magistrate Court on Monday, 31 December, facing a charge of using drugs (dagga) in public.
