Take your next picnic to a new level with these three easy sandwich ideas

POLOKWANE – Going for picnics is a fun holiday activity for families, especially during the festive season. Chef Thabiso Mathaba, who owns a restaurant in Turfloop gave Review some tips on what easy sandwiches one can prepare for the family when going out for a picnic.

Healthy beef burger patty with bread

Ingredients:

• Cheese (sliced or grated)

• Sliced onions

• Lettuce

• Olive oil

• Sliced tomatoes

• Sliced bread (Low GI)

• Salt for taste

• Sauces of your choice (tomato sauce, mustard, mayo or sweet chili sauce)

Preparation:

• Heat some oil in a pan.

• Let it heat up and place the burger patties and sliced onions in the pan (fry the same time or separate)

• Fry for about 2 – 5 minutes as patties don’t usually take long (use a spatula to flip the patties while frying)

• Cook/fry for about 5 – 10 minutes (If the stove is too hot, fry until golden brown)

• Take the patties and onions out of the pan (let the oil drip into the pan for a while) and place on the bread

• Place the sliced cheese on top of the (hot) patty so that it melts easily

• Place two or three slices of tomatoes

• Wash the lettuce first then place it on the rest of the ingredients

• Spread some sauces as a top up and cover with the other slice of bread

Tinned fish/tuna toasted sandwich

Ingredients:

• Sandwich toaster

• Sliced Bread (Low GI)

• Tinned fish/tune

• Mayonnaise

• Butter (low fat) to oil the sandwich toaster

• Diced onions (in small pieces)

• Bowl and spoon to mix

How to prepare:

• Open the tin and pour it in a bowl.

• Pour two spoons of mayonnaise and diced onions in the bowl and mix altogether with a spoon

• Place the tuna/fish mix on a bread and seal with another sliced bread (prepare as much bread as you want)

• Switch the sandwich-toaster on and let it heat up, spread the toaster with some butter on both sides

• Once heated up, place the bread filled with tuna/fish mix on both sides of the sandwich toaster

Sunny-side-up egg sandwich

Ingredients:

• Mayonnaise

• Eggs

• Olive oil

• Sliced Bread (low GI)

• Butter (low fat)

• Frying pan

• Salt and pepper to taste

• One avocado and tomato

How to prepare:

• Put stove on and heat oil in the pan

• Once the pan has heated up, fry them till sunny-side-up (medium or well done)

• Sprinkle some salt and pepper (optional)

• Spread some butter or mayonnaise on the slice of bread

• Take the egg/s out of the pan with a spatula and place them on one slice of bread

• Slice some avo and tomato and place on top (season with a pinch of salt or pepper)

• Seal the bread with the other of bread
