Recovering addict tells his story

The 18-year-old Alvin Senona from Ga-Thoka in Mankweng is a recovering drug addict who believes for drug addicts to be reformed, South Africa needs to look at the reason behind the addiction before judging the addict.

POLOKWANE – He explained that a lot of young people go through so much in their lives: emotional or physical abuse, bullying from school and all the other pressures they are faced with every day.

“ I have a plan to recruit all these reformed drug addicts to get together and form a team and film all the things they go through. I think if we put a movie together then we can be able to show other countries what the youth of South Africa go through on a daily basis,” Alvin explained.

The Gr 10 learner at Mountainview Senior Secondary School said he works with the South African Police Services in Mankweng to try and see how best they can help the youth starting with the ones in Mankweng who are closer to him.

“I come from a poor family. It was hard for my mother to raise me and my brother with nothing, but she always made sure we were well fed and provided for, I was very abusive towards my younger brother since we didn’t have a father. So I thought all the things I did to him were right until someone told me to stop,” he said.

He says with the help of the community these addicts will be able to change but if they are crucified and criticised, nothing will stop them from dwelling to drugs.

“They say it takes a village to raise a child which is why I plead with our community to help me help these young people”, he added.
