Heavy rains lead to high mud content causing Olifantspoort plant to shut down again

Lepelle Northern Water says due to a high content of mud, the purification process has been interrupted

POLOKWANE – The Olifantspoort Plant has been stopped yet again due to a high raw NTU level which is above 38 000, says Lepelle Northern Water.

“This means that the water coming in from the river has a high content of mud and other debris as a result of heavy rains yesterday. This makes the purification process difficult and has potential to damage the purification system,” a statement read.

This comes just a day after the plant was said to be  operating at full capacity and pumping to Polokwane

As a result, all areas of supply will be affected as reservoir levels are still low following several stoppages from both Ebenezer and Olifantspoort in the past week.

The Polokwane Municipality says they will deploy water tankers to affected areas.
