Within days after a cleansing ceremony was held along the N1 yet another horror accident claimed the lives of seven people who were burnt beyond recognition after a truck and a sedan collided near Mookgophong on Sunday morning.
Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala indicated that the truck was apparently travelling south and the sedan in the opposite direction when one of the drivers reportedly swerved into oncoming traffic causing a head-on collision.
Both vehicles caught fire on impact and all the occupants of the sedan burnt to death, according to Moremi-Taueatsoala, who added that fatigue was suspected to have been the cause of the crash.
All the victims are from Zimbabwe and the process to identify them is ongoing. Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
“Fatigue is the biggest killer as the chance of one losing control of a vehicle becomes higher when loss of concentration sets in. As a department, we again reiterate that motorists should rest when feeling tired especially when taking long distance trips. We advise drivers to rest every two hours or after every 200 km during long journeys,” Transport and Community Safety MEC Makoma Makhurupetje was quoted to have said in a press statement.
She added that the allowed speed limit on the N1 remains 120 km/h and anyone who exceed this is not only infringing the law but also exposing themselves and other road users to danger.
