Boy (8) drowns in sewage dam near Lephalale

Police say the boy was playing with his two friends near the dam when he fell inside

LIMPOPO – Police in Limpopo are urging communities to place more emphasis on child safety to prevent and avoid casualties as well as incidents of missing children around the province.

This follows the drowning of an 8-year-old boy on Sunday, 25 November, in a nearby sewage dam in Extension 4, Marapong, outside Lephalale.

According to police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the boy was playing with his two friends when he fell inside.

The boy’s friends ran home for help and police were summoned and began searching. The boy’s lifeless body was retrieved from the sewege dam and was identified as Jan Katlego Modimola.

“Police would like to reiterate their earnest call to communities to always keep an eye on their children. Parents and guardians should take note that we are now in a rainy season, let us all be responsible and worry about children’s whereabouts. Furthermore, since it is the festive season and children will be on school holidays, their safety must be a definite priority. Parents must talk to their kids and make them to be aware of the all the possible dangers around them,” he explained.

Police are still investigating the matter.
