Business owners in the city are confident that a possible increase of the repo rate of at least 0,25% of a percentage point that was expected to be announced by the Reserve Bank today, will not adversely affect sales on tomorrow’s Black Friday shopping spree.
This comes after Statistics South Africa has indicated in its latest report that retail sales in shops have dropped with 0,6% in September, compared with the figures of August. It was, however, 0,7% higher than the same time last year.
“We are confident that shoppers will use this opportunity to do some of their Christmas shopping now, making use of the savings that we offer. “Now is the right time to buy that special item at a handsome discount while stocks last,” a business owner said. Another shopkeeper reckoned that shoppers still waiting for their end of the year bonuses, will not be able to resist the temptation to jump for the bargains, making use of short term credit.
