Renaming of Jack Botes Hall to include a public participation process

A motion to rename the Jack Botes Hall to Ike Maphoto Hall, submitted by the EFF on 31 January, was once more discussed during the last municipal council meeting last week.

POLOKWANE – The motion was planned to be discussed by the Geographic Names Committee of the municipality for consideration.

The committee noted that, in terms of the current policy, the 2011 policy did not cater for the renaming of municipal buildings and there were no procedures clearly identified in the policy, which only catered for the naming or renaming of streets and townships. An item was sent to the Geographic Names Committee to deliberate on how the debate can be handled.

The resolution of the committee would then be tabled in Council after the scheduled meeting took place.

Polokwane Municipality is developing policy guidelines to provide for the change of geographic names in the municipal area. The draft policy served before the local Geographic Names Committee on 6 September and before the Administration and Governance Committee on 8 October and was due to serve at the Mayoral Committee on 24 October.

The draft policy now includes the detailed procedure and processes to be followed and will be tabled in council prior to undertaking a public participation process.
