Three doctors reportedly suffered serious injuries when they were allegedly shot during a robbery at the doctors’ residence at Letaba Hospital in the early hours of this morning (Thursday).
Although circumstances are still sketchy, information posted on Department of Health’s social media page alleged that five heavily armed men had gained access to the residence, robbed occupants of their belongings and shot three doctors in the process.
Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba is expected to visit the hospital today (Thursday), it was learnt.
In a media statement Premier Stan Mathabatha has repeated his concern about criminal activities at health facilities and across the province at this time of the year. He was quoted to have said: “We urge the community to work with the Police to apprehend these heinous criminals. These people live with us and surely somebody knows them.”
He further called upon the Police to act swiftly in order to hunt down the criminals and apprehend them. Mathabatha said there should be no mercy shown to people who attack medical facilities.
“We urge citizens to remain alert during the Festive Season since criminals are very active during this hyped and exciting times. Above all let us report any suspicious activity to the Police, he urged.
Provincial Police spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe, in response to inquiries about the incident, confirmed that they were working on a statement to be issued in due course.
