New life breathed into Samaritan House

"The home has in the past year experienced a huge hiccup, however we can assure the community that we have not lost hope or given up on our mission and goal, which is to serve the community by helping to look after children who do not have parents. It is our passion"

POLOKWANE – Following a court ruling by the High Court on 29 June, Samaritan House was given another opportunity to run the centre after they found itself in hot water in April this year.
This, after the needs of the children who lived there at the time, were not being met.

At the time, the home’s management accused the Department of Social Development of not meeting them halfway in terms of finances, to ensure they are able to care for the children.
The home mostly relies on donations to keep operations going.
According to Thuto Mashego, Fundraising Manager since the court ruling the home has acquired eight children and they are expecting more next year. He added that a lot of projects are currently underway which will help to ensure that the house runs smoothly and the children are well looked after.
“The home recently received goods worth R52 000, comprising 20 fully programmed computers with educational programmes from Polokwane Info. They along with other sponsors have really helped to give back life into the home. The children’s lives will be easy in terms of their education.
The University of Limpopo, URCSA Serala View and the community of Polokwane, Ark Printers, Limpopo Cash and Carry, Rev Tracking, VBK and Seda, Polokwane Muslim Trust, Mzanzi Athletics and Lima are just some of the sponsors who have come on board to invest in the children’s future and education,” he added.

Gladys Motlatla (Samaritan social worker), Thuto Mashego (Samaritan Fundraising Manager), Gerald du Toit (Polokwane Info General Manager), Sarah Galane (Samaritan House founder) and Josh Wall (Polokwane Info IT Manager) with some of the children at the home and some of the 20 computers.

Polokwane Info said that they are more than happy to help build future leaders of tomorrow by investing in their education.

“We hope that these computers will help to make studying easier and fun for the children,” added Joshua Wall, manager at Polokwane Info.

The centre, together with the schools the children attend, have made arrangements for the learners to write their final exams in the comfort of a warm home. The house say that they have decided to lead by example, by working hard to get the home back in shape and running again so that they earn as well as rebuild past relationships with former partners as well as the community who have been helping them take care of children living under stricken situations over the past years.

“Words can never be enough from us to those who have been with us for the past 18 years, they have helped to change a lot of children’s lives for the better, we still plead with them to come back to helping us in any way to care for these children and help make the community a better place to live in,” explained Sarah Galane, the home’s owner.
