Poisonous water poses health risk to Mogalakwena community

There are still problems with sewage, open manholes and poisonous waste flowing in the Ngwaditse River.

LIMPOPO – Thapelo Pooe, DA Councillor in Mogalakwena Municipality, said although the municipality did fix the manholes after the DA filed a complaint with the Green Scorpions (Environmental Management Inspectors), there are still problems.

Bosveld and Pooe visited the area that was reported.

Thapelo Pooe, (Democratic Alliance (DA) Councilor in Mogalakwena Municipality) standing next to the manhole that is not properly closed and toxic wast laying around.

“The municipality fixes the manholes, but the toxic sewage is not scooped up. This toxic waste will flow into Ngwaditse River with the first rain.

“There is also a sewer pipe that leaks and a terrible smell hangs in the air. All of this poisonous water can be seen in the Ngwaditse River running in the Mogalakwena River. The river water is dirty and possibly toxic too, I recommend that parents tell their children not to play in the river. The manhole is not properly covered and is a danger to animals and children.”

Pooe said it is sad to see the situation in which the community should live in and what the environment has to go through due to poor service delivery.

“This is a continuing problem that appears every two to three months that the sewage flows into the Ngwaditse River which is linked to the Mogalakwena River. It is a threat to the environment and presents a massive health risk for residents and a direct violation of the National Environmental Management Act and the Constitution that provide people with a healthy and clean environment.

“We encourage the municipality to seek a permanent solution to this problem and we will keep the municipality accountable for a health risk for our residents due to lack of service delivery.”

Bosveld did not receive any response from Communication Head of Mogalakwena Municipality, Malesela Selokela, before the newspaper went to print.
