Intro on Agriculture lecture
Actor and entrepreneur Cornet Mamabolo, along with his business partner and lecturer Potego Phakwago hosted an Introductory in Agriculture lecture at Big Ben Lodge on Saturday, 3 November.
POLOKWANE – Mamabolo, also known as Thibos from well-known soapie Skeem Saam on SABC 1 together with Phakwago who has over three years managerial experience, spoke about housing, animal breeding, intensive farming, cattle grazing and more about farming.
The purpose of the event was for people to understand the importance of farming and the processes behind it. They wanted the guests, especially students that are interested or studying agriculture, to understand crop planning, raising field crops in multiple cropping systems, field preparation, seed treatment, nursery raising, sowing, nutrient management, water management, weed management and management of insect pests and diseases of crops harvesting, threshing, drying, winnowing, storage and marketing of produce, preparation of balance sheet including cost of cultivation and other topics.
Potego touched on animal welfare and injuries and what causes these.
“Farmers and farm workers can easily be injured by livestock, cattle, pigs, horses, sheep, dogs and other farm animals can be unpredictable and should be treated with caution at all times. Attempting to lift or push animals can cause injury and animals may also transmit certain diseases. Plan ahead for any task, maintain a barrier between the animals and yourself, and get help if you need it,” Potego said.
He also touched on cattle injury cures, speaking about breed types such as livestock breeds.
