New name boards a hit with Mokopane residents

Ever wondered how all of a sudden new street names appeared on corners in town? Well Korny Dekker, DA councillor, is the brain behind the initiative.

MOKOPANE – Dekker told Bosveld on Wednesday morning that he came up with an idea to make the town a bit more pleasing to the eye after he realised that most of the street name boards are falling apart.

Korny Dekker (DA councillor) shows an example of a street name board that is falling apart and does not even show direction into the correct street.

“I went to the Mogalakwena Municipality’s corporate services division to arrange a plan to erect new street name boards. I was told the municipality did not budget for it and I was given a thumbs up to go ahead with my idea. A lot of street name boards have been erected already and I am receiving a lot of positive feedback from the community. The idea is for businesses to adopt a street pole. They pay for the expenses of creating the board and their business name or logo stands on top of the pole. This way it encourages businesses to take care of their street pole. They can plant plants around it or decorate it however they like.”

Already the town looks more creative where the street poles are planted and street names are more visible. Dekker also says that the pole and boards are built from stronger material than the original boards which will be much harder to break and might just last longer.

Malesela Selokela, Head of Communications at the Mogalakwena Municipality, says he is not yet aware of the new street names and that he will comment after the needed research is done.
