A middle-aged Danish woman in whose name Interpol issued a red notice and for whom an international media search had extended to Limpopo about three weeks ago, was arrested in Gauteng early Monday.
It was learnt that her arrest followed Interpol’s placing a red notice around mid-October this year.
National Police spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo informed Polokwane Observer that Britta Nielsen had been arrested in Sandton in Johannesburg on Monday at 06:30 and that she made a subsequent court appearance. She is expected back in court in Randburg again today (Thursday). When asked about the charge(s) against her, he couldn’t elaborate further.
Polokwane Observer was initially alerted about a matter of alleged theft of an amount equivalent to an estimated R250 million from a Danish ministry when approached for collaboration on an investigation steered from a newsroom in Denmark last month.
By then the media in that country had their sights set on South Africa, and specifically Phalaborwa, where the suspect was reportedly suspected to be hiding out.
