Nhlanhla Linah Jele, a 31-year-old School Governing Body member of a school in Dennilton is expected to appear in the Moutse Magistrate’s Court again next month to face a charge of perjury after she allegedly faked a robbery in which money earmarked for a school year-end function was reportedly stolen.
Provincial Police Corporate Communications Head, Motlafela Mojapelo indicated that the accused has already appeared in court on Friday and was granted bail of
R1 500.
He added that Jele was arrested last Thursday during an intelligence-driven operation conducted by members of the Crime Intelligence Unit and Dennilton Detective Services. This after Jele reported a case of house robbery at the Dennilton Police Station last Wednesday when she alleged that two suspects wearing balaclavas entered her house and took the money she withdrew earlier from the bank, according to Mojapelo.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman was allegedly faking the incident and a case of perjury was opened against her. She went to the bank to cash a cheque but instead of going back to the school she went home, according to Mojapelo. He added that some of the stolen money which was already deposited into the bank accounts of two other persons has been recovered.
Cases of theft are being considered against the recipients of a portion of the money and further arrests are not ruled out.
“Cases of this nature are starting to mushroom as we are gradually approaching the Festive Season and a stern warning is issued against these tendencies,” Mojapelo said.
