“In this accident, six people died after a collision between a Kia Sedan and an LDV Ford vehicle. The occupants of the Kia sedan were travelling from Tembisa to Mokopane to attend a family wedding. Sadly, all six occupants of the Kia sedan who died belonged to the same family,” said Matomi Moremi-Taueatsoala, departmental spokesperson.

The second crash happened on Saturday, 27 October, near Weenen bricks factory on the N1.

“Two people died after the vehicle they were travelling in was rear ended by a bus. It is alleged that a trailer drawn by an LDV vehicle was stuck in the middle of the road. The driver of a Mercedes Benz sedan had stopped near the trailer when a bus came from behind and hit the sedan killing two occupants of the sedan who were passengers.”

“In total we have tragically lost, not less than nine lives since this weekend started on Friday. 11 people have also been treated for various injuries. The saddest part is that these lives were lost on the notorious N1 road,” MEC Makhurupetje highlighted.

“As we convey our deepest condolences and wish a speedy recovery to those injured, we want SANRAL to conclude its investigations on alternative road designs. While this process is underway, we still insist that motorists should be careful and watchful at all times. Let us learn to exercise patience towards each other and obey the rules of the road. Of importance, is to remember that speed kills. Chances of one dying in a collision multiply two fold if one is speeding.” said MEC Makhurupetje.
