Sekhukhune school governing board member in court for “robbing herself”

She allegedy staged a fake house robbery in which money meant for the school's end of the year function was stolen

LIMPOPO – A 31-year-old woman and Dennilton school governing body member on Friday appeared before the Moutse Magistrate court for the alleged theft of  R29 000 from the school.

“On Wednesday she reported a case of house robbery at the Denilton Police Station and told officers that two suspects wearing balaclavas entered her house and took the money which was earmarked for end of the year function planned for the learners,” said Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.

It soon came to light during preliminary investigations that the woman was making up stories and a case of Perjury was immediately opened against her. She was arrested on Thursday 24 October during an intelligence-driven operation that was conducted by members of Crime Intelligence and Denilton Detective Service, he added.

“The police managed to recover some of the money from two other persons who had already deposited it into their respective bank accounts. The suspect had earlier gone to the local bank to cash a cheque and instead of taking it back to the school principal as per the school arrangement, she proceeded home and allegedly staged a fake house robbery,” Mojapelo explained.

Cases of theft are being considered against the recipients of a portion of this money and further arrests have not be ruled out.

The accused was granted R1500 bail and will again appear in the same court on 27 November.
