F1 hand grenade seized during sting operation outside Hoedspruit

Five suspects, aged between 26 and 60, were also arrested during the sting operation that was conducted outside Hoedspruit on Friday, 26 October.

LIMPOPO – According to Police spokesperson, Constable Maphure Manamela, the police were responding to a tip-off about suspects enroute to Hoedspruit with illegal explosives and intercepted them along the R40 road. During the search, police officials confiscated one F1 hand grenade and the white Kia the suspects were travelling in.

“The origin and destination of this explosive is still being determined although it is believed that this might be part of a syndicate responsible for business robberies where they use explosives to blow up safes.

The suspects will appear before Hoedspruit Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of possession of illegal explosives.

Meanwhile in Dorset policing area outside Lephalale, members of the Provincial Stock Theft unit joined by the Station members and local security officers arrested three suspects on Friday after they were found in possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“At about 21:45 on Friday the members followed up on information about these suspects travelling in the area. They vehicle was spotted and was stopped on the R33 road and searched.

During the search one high caliber rifle with ammunition, an axe, three knives, gloves and a pair of overalls were confiscated. It suspected that these suspects were on a mission to poach rhinos in the area, she added.

The suspects, aged between 32 and 42, will appear before Lephalale Magistrate’s court soon on a charge of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Police investigations are still continuing.
