[VIDEO] Cappies learners share tips to ace matric exams

With exam time, it is easy to get overwhelmed with the pressure of making sure that you put your best foot forward.

POLOKWANE – Pearl Mabasa, a counselor at Capricorn High School, explained that it is very important to not allow the stress of exams get to you. “Stress can be distracting and it can lead to not only health problems, but it can also lead to you not performing at your best. Sometimes the learners that I usually see having difficulty coping with not doing well in their exams, most often fail not because they did not know their school work but rather because they had a difficult time coping with the pressure and stress which resulted in them being thrown off their game,” she said.

She shared the following tips on how to get ready for exams.

Firstly, there is no best place to study, people differ, you just need to find a space that works specifically for you. One thing that needs to be stressed is that exams are something you can’t study for the day before, you need to commit yourself months in advance. “You can’t study a day before or two days before and expect to see miracles. Preparation for final exams begin at the beginning of the year and they require consistency and commitment to understanding your school work,” she said.

It is important to take breaks in between studying because the longer you study, the less you are able to concentrate. She also called for parents to be supportive at this time of the year. “Make their lives at home as easy as possible. Inquire about how preparation is going, after the exam, find out how they wrote. Make sure that they know that you are with them every step of the way,” she added.
